Games GDD

See before we get into this whole blog information thing we first have to know what a Game GGD is. Well in the game design industry the GGD stands for Game Design Document and this is a software design document that is served as a blueprint for the game you wish to create. It helps define the scope of your game and sets the general direction for the project.

And the purpose of these Game Design Documents is to describe the game's gameplay, art, design, levels, characters, story etc. Basically every game part requiring the development that the maker of the game gives in enough detail.

GDD

It usually includes:

  • Summary (genre, concept, target, etc)
  • Gameplay (progressions, objectives, etc)
  • Mechanics (rules, physics, etc)
  • Game Elements (story, location, characters, levels, etc)
  • Assets (music 2D/3D models, sound effects, etc)

Why is it important?

  • Makes your ideas concrete
  • Keeps you focused
  • Keeps everything in order
  • Everyone is on the same page

Writing your own Game Design Document

Rule #1 Do not use Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is a great application tool but documenting a game process on it is not a great idea.

Rule #2 Make it Visual

Do not fill everything with words because some ideas maybe showed more clearly if it was in graphs, flow charts or concept arts. Or just make the document into a mind map.

Rule #3

What to add when writing it up:

  • The name of the game - You should give the game you are making a fun or catchy name that reflects on what the game is about.
  • Game Description - This is almost like the summary of the game you want to create, without going into details about how it functions. After reading the game description people should know what type of game you want to build and the genre it is or from.
  • Main Character - The main character is a significant aspect of most games. They give their game concept, make it more relatable or enjoyable for the players.
  • Question Box
Story - The storytelling process is very focused in some games. They help players connect with the characters, and they feel more invested in the game.
  • Gameplay - This is one of the essential sections of the Game Design Document (GDD) and it defines what the gameplay will be like.
  • Graphics and Styling - With the overall gaming experience there is a lot about the quality of graphics and how impactful the game environment is.
  • Music and Sound Effects - The background music and sounds effects add as much to the overall players’ experience as the visuals and graphics.
  • Tech Description - In this section, you talk about different platforms where you will be launching the game and any specific tools that you are considering to use for the development process.
